Acid Reflux also known as "reflux esophagitis or GERD “Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease” is a very common mainly due to poor eating habits, stress and other conditions. The esophagis fails to close up resulting with acid from the stomach backing up causing heartburn. Acid Reflux happens when the liquid content acid from the stomach backs up into the esophagus causing regurgitation of the contents of the stomach. The stomach acid can destroy the esophagus lining. Those with Acid Reflux suffer from persistent heartburn with a burning sensation in the chest or throat. Some symptoms of Acid Reflux include: chest pain, wheezing, coarseness in the throat, breathing problems, a bitter taste in the mouth, dry cough, poor sleep, tightness in the throat, and halitosis or bad breath. Acid reflux can also lead to acid into the mouth from overeating or going to bed right after a meal.
The most common causes of Acid Reflux and Heartburn include: Stress, poor eating habits, high fat content foods, some antidepressants and sedatives, elevated hormone levels during pregnancy, eating before going to bed, eating large meals, slower emptying of the stomach, smoking, alcohol, consuming carbonated beverages such as soda, and diseases that weaken the esophageal muscle including: scleroderma, mixed connective tissue disease, or hiatal hernias.
The treatment of acid reflux is mostly based on the suppression of acid using prescription and over-the-counter drugs. Natural treatments are considered safer since they do not cause any negative side effects. Implementing a life-style change and a natural treatment is imperative to reduce or eliminate Acid Reflux and Heartburn.
Natural treatments for Acid Reflux and Heartburn include:
Following a healthy diet and drinking at least eight, eight oz. glasses of filtered water a day. More water is necessary to dilute the acid and normalize the pH.
It is important to replenish the healthy bacteria by consuming yogurt or a supplement with active bacteria – live cultures called lactobacillus acidophilus.
Lemon water is effective with the digestive system working better. Fresh lemon juice is similar to our digestive enzymes. Although thought of as acidic, lemon water actually helps with digestive problems. Digestive ailments such as indigestion, heartburn, acid stomach, acid reflux, constipation, gastritis, irritable bowel syndrome, bloating, belching, and stomach pain may be cured or improved. Drink lemon water or herbal tea with lemon in the morning to alkalize the digestive tract and to produce bile for proper food digestion during the day.
Fresh fruits and vegetables, preferably raw are important for health building. Raw fruits and vegetables are rich in enzymes. Papaya and pineapple are extremely high in enzyme levels. Enzymes are necessary for digestion. When the body does not receive enzymes from healthy food, then the body has to manufacture its own enzymes for digestion working hard to break down foods. Foods rich in enzymes can help to maintain a good weight, increase energy, and heal sickness.
